UN: 97% of Gaza schools destroyed by Israeli bombing

  • UN: 97% of Gaza schools destroyed by Israeli bombing

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has announced that Gaza’s schools are on the brink of total collapse following Israel’s military assaults.

In an official statement today, UNRWA declared that the educational system in the Gaza Strip is nearing complete breakdown due to the destruction of all school buildings during Israeli bombardments.

UNRWA added in a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) account: “Recent satellite images released by the UN Satellite Centre show that 9 out of 10 schools — including UNRWA schools — require full reconstruction or major rehabilitation.”

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) also stated that the latest damage assessment, based on last month’s satellite images, reveals that 97% of educational facilities in Gaza have been destroyed, with 91% requiring full reconstruction before they can reopen.

The agency further noted that restrictions imposed by Israeli authorities continue to block the entry of educational supplies into Gaza, negatively affecting the volume and quality of aid delivered.

According to OCHA, between July 1 and 10, 2025, Israeli occupation forces bombed at least 10 schools that had been turned into shelters — some of which had already been damaged in previous strikes — killing 59 people and displacing dozens of families.
