Human Rights as an international project emerged on the global stage about 60 years ago and today it is one of the most important and challenging issues. The Islamic Republic of Iran has been under widespread Western aggression under the pretext of human rights issues, since the victory of the revolution. Accordingly, the Supreme National Security Council established the “High Council for Human Rights” on 31 December 2005 and introduced this Council as a reference body on human rights issues in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Duties of the High Council for Human Rights
The main tasks of the High Council for Human Rights are as follows:
- Monitoring and following up the stand of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the international arena and countering the attacks.
- Development of bilateral and multilateral cooperation with countries in the field of human rights.
- Monitoring the human rights situation inside and outside the country, especially with focus on the current issue of Islamophobia in the West as well as the widespread human rights violations in the name of combating terrorism in the region and the world.
- Theoretical development of human rights based on Islamic thought, which guarantees prosperity in the scientific and intellectual communities of the Islamic world.
- Following up and trying to establish an organization and a center for documenting Islamic human rights through the member countries of the Organization of the Islamic Conference.
Principal members of the High Council for Human Rights
According to the decision of the Supreme National Security Council, the head of the High Council for Human Rights is the Head of the Judiciary. The High Council for Human Rights has a Secretary-General who is appointed by the Head of this Council. The members of the Council include: The Secretary-General of the High Council, Attorney General of the Country, Head of the Supreme Court, Head of the State Inspectorate Organization, Head of State Prisons and Security and Corrective Measures Organization, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Justice, Minister of Intelligence, Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance, Minister of Interior: Head of the Legal Committee of the Secretariat of the Supreme National Security Council, Deputy of the International Security of the Secretariat of the Supreme National Security Council, Commander of Police Force, two experienced lawyers or judges.
