A joint statement signed in Tehran during the second meeting of the joint committee of Iran and Iraq to investigate the case of the assassination of Lt. Gen. Qassem Soleimani and his companions.
Iran's Deputy Head of Judiciary for International Affairs reported on Thursday that in the statement, the assassination of General Soleimani, Abu Mahdia al-Muhandis, and their companion in Baghdad was considered as a violation of the international conventions and required international prosecution.
"Documents and information related to the involvement of the American defendants were provided by the Iranian delegation to the Iraqi delegation, and it was decided that further investigations would be carried out by the judiciary of the two countries in this regard," he explained.
The second round of negotiations to pursue the case of the assassination of General Qasem Soleimani and identify the perpetrators was held on Tuesday, December 21, 2001, and the third round will be held in Baghdad until the next month.
In the first round of the talks, four objectives to achieve were agreed upon: to take all possible legal and judicial measures, to prosecute and punish all those involved in the crime, particularly the US agents and nationals involved, to continue and enhance bilateral cooperation for completing the ongoing judicial investigation, to utilize all available capacities, to provide and complete the required information on the case.
The third round of the Joint Investigation Committee meeting will be held in Baghdad in the next 45 days.
