Iran: The Voice of Cultural Diversity in the World

  • Iran: The Voice of Cultural Diversity in the World

On the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, the Islamic Republic of Iran — a leading example in promoting intercultural dialogue — reaffirms the profound value of cultural diversity as a vital human and civilizational asset.

Iran is a land with millennia of history where diverse cultures, languages, traditions, and lifestyles have peacefully coexisted. This coexistence has become an inseparable part of our national identity.

Iran’s cultural heritage — both tangible and intangible — is not only a symbol of beauty and artistry but also a vessel of deep ethical values, rationality, peace-seeking, and respect for others. From Nowruz to traditional music, storytelling, carpet weaving, religious rituals, and local languages, each element reflects a part of the shared spirit of Iranians and their connection with other peoples and nations.

In a world where 89% of conflicts occur in countries with weak cultural dialogue, and where tensions, extremism, and injustice often stem from ignoring cultural differences, dialogue among cultures is not merely a choice — it is a necessity for global peace, sustainable development, and mutual understanding. Iran proclaims with a clear voice: “Cultural diversity is a national treasure and a guarantor of lasting peace.”

Just as UNESCO regards culture as a “global public good.”

With dozens of cultural elements inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage Lists and grounded in a humanistic and ethical discourse, the Islamic Republic of Iran consistently supports cultural exchange, multilateralism, and international cooperation in the realm of culture. It strives to share the rich and diverse voice of its nation with the world.

Cultural diversity is not a threat; it is an opportunity for dialogue, synergy, peaceful coexistence, and building a world founded on respect, justice, and human dignity.

The Islamic Republic of Iran, emphasizing the role of cultural diplomacy in UNESCO meetings, advocates for the rights of artists, supports indigenous communities, and opposes digital homogenization. As stated in the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity (2001):

“Cultures must come together, not become alike.”

This principle encapsulates the core message of the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, as well as UNESCO’s cultural conventions.

Indeed, culture is the most powerful ally in times of crisis and recovery. It is the medium through which we can nurture and enrich our inner lives. Culture enables us to come together, remember the past, and envision the future. It allows us to understand that differences are opportunities to celebrate the richness of the human mind, broaden our horizons, and achieve unity in diversity.

On this day, UNESCO calls upon all to celebrate cultural diversity — through which we can foster the intellectual and moral solidarity of humanity.
