Iran reminds Germany of complicity in Saddam s chemical attack on Sardasht

  • Iran reminds Germany of complicity in Saddam s chemical attack on Sardasht
Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani has reminded Germany of its complicity in a chemical attack launched by toppled Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s regime on Sardasht in northwestern Iran in the 1980s.

In a Twitter message on Tuesday, Kanaani said that it is highly unlikely that the German foreign minister is not aware of the Iranian people's mentality about chemicals and gases used during the Iraqi-imposed war and their connection to then German government.

He said how is it that a foreign minister, whose government has been responsible for equipping Saddam's regime with chemical weapons and killing and poisoning thousands of Iranian citizens, dare to speak about human rights in Iran.

The Baath regime of Iraq used mustard gas and nerve agents against civilians in Sardasht in 1987. The Iraqis dropped seven bombs in urban areas including two bombs in a marketplace, two bombs in a residential district, and three bombs in nearby garden.

The population of Sardasht was estimated at 12,000 at the time. Many of the 95% who survived the gas attack later developed serious long-term complications, including serious respiratory problems, eye lesions, skin problems, as well as problems with their immune system.
