The United Nations will witness another show by the Biden administration, which attempts to pursue a dangerous path at the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) to pave the way for the cancellation of the Islamic Republic's membership in the international body.
The United States has a long history of showing hostile policies towards independent states such as Iran. The American administrations have been resorting to different methods, including covert and overt interventions, triggering coups and unrest as well as misusing international entities under the guise of defending human rights and democracy.
The administration of Joe Biden has supported recent unrest in Iran from the onset and promoted the anti-Iran show of the Arria Formula meeting at the UN and pursued ratification of a draft resolution called human rights situation in Iran on November 24 in Geneva, Switzerland; then, the Americans want to follow up cancellation of Iran’s membership in the Commission on the Status of Women.
The Islamic Republic of Iran was accepted as a member state of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC) with 43 votes out of 54 members for a four-year period from 2022 to 2026.
The CSW is a subcommittee of the ECOSOC, which has kicked off its efforts concerning challenges and problems of women since 1946.
Kamala Harris, the vice president of the United States, raised the issue of canceling Iran’s membership in the CSW for the first time following a session with an opponent of the Islamic Republic named Nazanin Bonyadi, who called for the increase of sanctions on the country.
The New York Times also published a letter from renowned American women such as former secretary of state Hillary Clinton and former first lady Michelle Obama, who called for immediate departure of the Islamic Republic from the CSW.
Moreover, foreign ministers from the US, Britain, Australia, Canada, Chile, Iceland, New Zealand, South Korea and Sweden issued a joint meddlesome statement, accusing the Islamic Republic of violating women’s rights.
Now on December 14, the US puts forward a draft resolution to promote the member states of the CSW to vote for cancellation of Iran’s membership in the UN subcommittee.
Amir Saeed Iravani, Iran's ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations, wrote a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and sent a copy of it to Lachezara Stoeva, ECOSOC President, urging the secretary general to use its capabilities to prevent such US-led unconstructive efforts.
