Assassination of Fakhrizade another double standard in western human rights policies: HCHR official

  • Assassination of Fakhrizade another double standard in western human rights policies: HCHR official

Lashing out the double standards in human rights policies of western countries, the Deputy to the Secretary of HCHR said that the western approach toward the assassination of Dr.Fakhrizade symbolizes the contemptuous double standards in the scope of protecting human rights.

In an interview with Young Journalists Club, Seyed Majid Tafreshi, the Deputy of International Affairs to the High Council for Human Rights mentioned the double standards in western countries’ approach to human rights and said that considering the systematic violation of human rights resulting from arms trade to countries like the Saudi regime and commission of war crimes against Yemen, as confirmed by the UN Secretary General, a country like Canada that celebrates such arms deal with Saudi Arabia has committed a grave violation of human rights and needs to be prosecuted and punished for acting as an accomplice in the commission of the mentioned crimes.

He mentioned the advances made in producing deadly warfare which has caused, as reported by the International Red Cross, more than 90 per cent of casualties to be of civilians in armed conflicts.

Tafreshi also mentioned the drastic increase in production of narcotics in the war-stricken Afghanistan after it was occupied by the US and its western allies and said that when the international community asked for the reason for such a huge rise from 200 tons to nine thousands tons in two years, there was no response for that. Such measures reveal that when there are financial interests in violating human rights, killing Yemeni children with western arms and making European or American youth addicted to drugs make no difference to western countries, he added.

“Unilateral sanctions against Iran violate the UN Charter (25), therefore, any country supporting such sanctions would expand the violation of human rights against Iran and would not be eligible to express opinion s on the issue of human rights”.

He also discussed the assassination of Iranian nuclear scientists and said that considering the international instruments on the issue of nuclear energy and governmental terrorism, it can be concluded that the silence of certain countries with respect to the assassination of Dr.Fakhrizade and other Iranian scientists is a clear example of double standards in western countries’ approach to protecting human rights.
