Racism and Systematic Discrimination in France according to Amnesty International's Annual Report

  • Racism and Systematic Discrimination in France according to Amnesty International's Annual Report
Amnesty International has reported ongoing human rights violations in France, particularly regarding racism and discrimination based on religion.
The organization’s “State of the World’s Human Rights” report for 2023 highlighted systematic racism and discrimination in France, including the ban on Muslim athletes wearing the hijab while representing France in the Paris Olympics, as well as the ban on long dresses abaya in French schools.

These actions are seen as violations affecting Muslim women. The report also criticized the cancellation of some protests in 2023 citing “public security,” especially protests in solidarity with Palestine, deeming it disproportionate and discriminatory against the right to peaceful assembly.

It also noted continued excessive use of force by the police during demonstrations.

The report addressed new restrictions in France’s immigration and asylum policies, expressing concern over a proposed law granting law enforcement broader surveillance powers ahead of the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.
