As published by the Humanium Site on November 28, 2023, the number of children who receive social assistance in Germany is estimated at about 2.8 million, that means, 1 in every 5 children live in a low income family.
They go to low-ranking schools and receive less assistance from their families and consequently most of the time they drop school. Statistics have shown that these children are very poor in reading and writing compared to their classmates from wealthy families.
Moreover, 150,000 victims of violence and 20,000 sexual abuses are recorded in Germany. Most of the time, these abuses are carried out by their parents. As stated by UNICEF, 2 children die every week as a result of violence and negligence.
Furthermore, the situation of child refugees in Germany is very worrying. Without official resident permits, many children do not have access to basic health care or better education. At 16, young refugees are considered as adults and can be detained before being sent back home.
As stated by the UNICEF, Children across Germany have been hit especially hard by the COVID-19 pandemic in the past two years as many parents have lost their jobs and now inflation is once again on the rise - worsening the situation even more. The UNICEF has criticized Germany for not doing enough to protect its young people.
