Guterres

The UN Secretary General António Guterres in a message stressed the importance of supporting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East as a relief and human development agency (UNRWA).

'I was so moved to see students in an @UNRWA school in Jordan learning about democracy, human rights & tolerance, preparing them to be exemplary citizens,' Guterres wrote on his Twitter account.

He added 'These schools cannot be closed! I appeal to the international community to continue their support to UNRWA.'

Earlier, the United States Department of State blocked 65 million dollars of the $125m humanitarian aid to Palestinian refugees and announced that giving more aids depends on fundamental modifications by UNRWA.

The US act was slammed by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), Lebanese Hezbollah, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the President of the United Nations General Assembly Miroslav Lajčák among others.

This is while, earlier, one hundred and 12 members of US Congress in a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has called for suspension of a US administration plan to cut financial aids to UNRWA.

In the meantime, Hannan Ashrawi senior member of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) in a separate statement slammed the US act saying 'The US administration is demonstrating the use of cheap blackmail as a political tool.'

Meanwhile earlier, the European Union’s Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini addressing UNRWA ministerial meeting and Ad Hoc Liaison Committee meeting said 'We will add €40 million to our financing to @UNRWA on top of the funding we are already providing [..] We will continue to invest in that because we think this is a key, not only humanitarian duty, but also investment in the two state solution.'
