In a meeting with the human rights NGOs in Iran on Saturday, the International affairs deputy of the High Council for Human Rights said that NGOs play an important role in preparing UPR reports through expressing their expert points of view.

The issue of human rights is global and since Iran is a member state of international treaties, we are responsible for fulfilling our obligations, namely UPR reports.

“A great innovation made by the Human Rights Council is the UPR. It is actually an active and clear mechanism which examines all countries’ comprehensive human rights reports including human rights progression, developments and shortcomings. We are expected to prepare and deliver our UPR report to the Human Rights Council once in every four and a half years”, he added.

Tafreshi also said that the Islamic Republic of Iran is among the few countries who, in addition to the mentioned report, deliver their voluntary report to the Human Right council biennially. This responsible measure has been acknowledged by the Human Rights Council. A noticeable part of our national human rights reports has been allocated to reflect the NGOs’ viewpoints, therefore, they are considered as an important source in this regard, he said.

He also mentioned that today there are thousands of legally-registered NGOs working actively in different field in Iran and their reports are considered as damning evidence by the international community.

Unfortunately, these days the issue of human rights is used as a tool by arrogant countries. Those who raise human rights arguments against Iran are now in charge of the cruel sanctions against the country, Tafreshi said.

The aim of holding such meetings with NGOs is to exchange ideas which would lead to preparing documented reports that could be defended at the Human Rights Council, he added.
