Bahrain’s pro-democracy activists have now called on all parties to rally behind Sheikh Abdullah Saleh’s (Deputy Secretary-General of the Islamic Action Society) demands to establish a constituent assembly, so that a national constitution could at last be formulated by way of a popular petition.

The popular petition intends to break the current status quo by mobilizing popular support, and thus encourage international actors to assert pressure on the regime.

Hassan Qamber, official spokesperson of this movement has called for the international community to lend its support in view of easing Bahrain towards a long awaited and needed democratic transition.

“For over eight years Bahrainis have suffered under the weight of political oppression and the world can no longer stand idle as men, women, and children pay with their lives and their freedoms for their legitimate democratic aspirations. Like any other nation, Bahrain deserves to be free to carve its political future.”

The popular petition, which will be delivered to all relevant United Nations’ bodies for further consultation, including the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, several prominent international rights organizations in Geneva as well as a number of European states, will serve as a springboard for meaningful and tangible change in Bahrain.

He further emphasized on the need to formulate a sensible way out of the crisis through the election of a Constituent Assembly and the drafting of a new constitution, as to prevent a further eroding of the state institutions.

It is said that one of the main objective of the popular petition is to correct Bahrain’s ongoing political entropy and reframe the political narrative within a truly democratic framework.

The popular petition will be officially unveiled in Beirut, Lebanon on Thursday during a press conference. It will coincide with calls by members of the opposition to boycott November’s parliamentary elections - a move prompted by Manama’s insistence to define its rule in violence and bloodshed.
