Addressing the last day of the thirty-seventh regular session of the UN Human Rights Council, Mr. Mohsen Naziri Asl, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of I.R Iran to the UN office in Geneva, said issuance of an unjust and political resolution against Iran was contrary to basic principles and objectives of the Human Rights Council.
Mohsen Nazari Asl, while criticizing political motives in drafting a resolution on human rights against the Islamic Republic of Iran, said the resolution on the situation of human rights in Iran lacks legal nature and marks a misapplication of the council's integrity and procedures to achieve political goals and objectives of certain countries. He considered the continuation of the ongoing approach as not only ineffective in promoting the culture of discourse, but also as a violation of the Human Rights Council's basic principles and objectives.
Nazari Asl deemed appointment of the Special Rapporteur for Iran as an unfair, unnecessary, meaningless and non-constructive decision that undermines credibility of the United Nations human rights apparatus. He also stressed the necessity for all member states to avoid any political and unfair efforts leading to expansion of disputes and expressed regret at the decision of initiators of the resolution against Iran which expands the mission of the Special Rapporteur of Iran. The official called on the members to be more aware of the increasing global threats and the need for a comprehensive coalition to confront them.
The anti-Iran resolution was approved by 21 votes in favor, 7 against and 19 abstentions, and the mandate of the special reporter of Iran was extended for another year.
