The Vice President of the Judiciary for International Affairs and the Secretary General of the High Council for Human Rights of the Islamic Republic of Iran gave explanations about the follow-up of the situation of Mohammad Reza Nouri, an Iranian citizen imprisoned in Iraq.

HCHR_"Kazem Gharibabadi", the Vice President of the Judiciary for International Affairs and the Secretary General of the High Council for Human Rights of the Islamic Republic of Iran, regarding the situation of Mr. "Mohammedreza Nouri", an Iranian citizen imprisoned in Iraq and the various follow-ups carried out in this regard, said: “The situation of this Iranian citizen was followed up twice through phone call and also during the visit of the Head of the Judiciary to Iraq in March 2024. As a result of legal and judicial follow-ups, Mr. Nouri's charge changed from terrorist act to other titles. Therefore, the legal basis for the his transfer to Iran was provided within the framework of the agreement on the transfer of convicts. Of course, the claims and accusations against him have no basis and in the same framework and follow-ups, the U.S. request for the extradition of this Iranian citizen has not been approved by the Iraqi side.

Gharibabadi added: “I had a correspondence with Mr. Khaled Shawani, the Minister of Justice and Human Rights of Iraq, after Mr. Nouri's father met with me a few months ago and explained the unfavorable situation of his son. I asked Mr. Khaled Shawani to take the necessary measures regarding the improvement of Mr. Nouri's conditions of detention and providing him with necessary facilities. The embassy of our country in Iraq is in contact with Mr. Nouri and the prison authorities in this regard”.

The Vice President of the Judiciary emphasized that Mr. Nouri's transfer to Iran is on the agenda and serious follow-ups of the Judiciary and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Gharibabadi added: “In this regard, a letter was sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs last week so that by using the necessary capacities, this matter will be realized soon”.

In the end, the Secretary General of the HCHR emphasized that Mr. Nouri's arrest is an example of arbitrary arrest and he should be transferred to Iran as soon as possible.
