UNHRC no good place for owners of appalling human rights records

  • UNHRC no good place for owners of appalling human rights records
دکتر محمد جواد لاریجانی

Secretary of Iran’s High Council for Human Rights Mohammad Javad Larijani said the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) was not a good place for countries like the US who have abysmal and atrocious records on human rights violations and crimes against humanity.

Larijani made the remarks in reaction to US withdrawal from the Human Rights Council. He described the US exit as a piece of good news asserting that “all those countries who view human rights as a behavioral value away from dual standards, political games and coverage of terrorist activities must hail Trump’s move in pulling out of UNHRC.

The Iranian official went on to state that “presence of US in the Human Rights Council had lowered dignity of the international body; “as such, other countries who have committed massive crimes humanity had also better drop out of the Council.” He further explained that these countries include those involved in crimes committed in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Bahrain and Afghanistan, those who have been involved in establishment, support and guidance of ISIL and al-Qaeda as well as those have established prisons like Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo and other secret dungeons in different parts of the world.

Referring to possible outcomes of US withdrawal, he emphasized that presence of Americans, on its own, had questioned seriousness of the Council; therefore, the Islamic Republic of Iran, along with all freedom-loving nations of the world, and governments that pursue human rights issues far from political games and dual standards, will be happy with the move. In fact, the US was forced to step down from the Human Rights Council. The US government, with its spirit of arrogance, thinks that it should have the final say everywhere and, for the same reason, Americans ought to pull out of the United Nations and the Security Council as well.

Iran’s Deputy Judiciary Chief for International Affairs, underlined that the US must understand that its claim of being the world’s leader is a false vision, as the world never requires self-assigned and stubborn leaders who possess scandalous records in committing crimes.

“The United Nations and the Security Council are organizations that belong to all nations in the world and members of the Security Council should be selected by the United Nations and far from political tendencies. Other members who do not deserve to be present at the Council will certainly reduce the international body’s prestige,” noted Mohammad Javad Larijani expressing hope that international institutions can one day maintain dignity of the independent states of the world.
