During a seven-hour visit made to Tehran’s women’s prison on Friday, the Secretary of High Council for Human Rights said that the prison should be the last option for women. He also appreciated the measures taken to improve the conditions of the prison and said that the conditions of prisoners should not be based on the crime they have committed and all efforts are to be made in order to prepare them for going back into the society.
The aim of imprisonment punishment is to for a person who has committed a wrong deed to receive guidelines and assistance so that they would be able to be accepted by the society, Bagheri added.
He also said that women are mostly victims of social problems and due to their nature, prison should not be the first option for them since they could act as the most important factor in raising a healthy society.
On the sideline of this visit, Bagheri and the Director of Prisons Organization met with many inmates including Nasrin Sotoodeh and Kylie Moore-Gilbert.
